Mitchell Plateau to be made a National Park
A major win for environmentalists who have been lobbying hard for over 25 years to have the Mitchell Plateau listed as a National Park. An agreement has been cancelled between the state and mining giants, Rio Tinto who have given up their rights to mine bauxite and Alcoa the right to refine aluminium on the Mitchell Plateau.
The Mitchell Plateau in the north-west of the Kimberley is a region of significant biological diversity, encompassing spectacular gorges and waterfalls, rare flora and fauna and many new and yet to be discovered species. The Mitchell Plateau will be included in the 5 million hectare Kimberley National Park.
